Schools' duties under the Equality Act
‘Compliance with the Equality Duty is a legal requirement for schools, but meeting it also makes good educational sense. The equality duty helps schools to focus on key issues of concern and how to improve pupil outcomes. These are also central to the OFSTED inspection framework.’

Since April 2012 schools have been required to publish information showing how they comply with the duties in the Equality Act. That information must be updated annually. Any schools not having done so already should look to publish information soonest, while others will be intending to update. There is excellent new guidance available at:

The reasonable adjustments duty was extended from September 2012 to include the requirement for schools to provide auxiliary aids and services to disabled pupils. For updated guidance in either Word or PDF format, go to:
