NQT Induction Services - Update
As the Appropriate Body for Norfolk's NQTs, the Local Authority has the main quality assurance role for NQT induction. Furthermore, as the Appropriate Body, Norfolk LA is jointly responsible for the supervision and training of NQTs during induction. With increasing numbers of NQTs registering with us, we feel a timely reminder of our service provision, along with clarification of roles and responsibilities, will be useful to schools employing NQTs.
Statutory Requirements
It is a statutory requirement for NQTs to satisfactorily meet the new teacher standards. Qualified teachers who are employed in maintained schools, non-maintained special schools, maintained nursery schools and pupil referral units in England must, by law, complete an induction period (unless they are covered by any of the exemptions in Annex B of the statutory guidance www.education.gov.uk ) after gaining qualified teacher status (QTS). They must have access to a mentor and have a reduced timetable.

An Expectation
An effective induction programme should be in place to enable new teachers to build on and extend the knowledge and skills developed during initial teacher training and provide the foundation for continuing professional development. Norfolk's training programme and NQT Manager has been designed to facilitate this www.norfolk.nqtmanager.com. All details of NQT Training Modules and the Mentor Training Programme are on this site. |
Important Information about the role of Induction Tutors
Induction tutors should be assigned as early as possible before the new school term in which an NQT's induction begins. Training for Induction tutors is highly recommended in view of recent changes to the Induction programme and the new Teachers' Standards. www.norfolk.nqtmanager.com . All NQT reports need to be cross-referenced to the new Teachers' Standards and, in order to support mentors, an example of a completed assessment report has been uploaded to NQT Manager.
It is not expected that all NQTs will have fully met all Teachers' Standards until the end of the induction period when the final report is produced. It is therefore vital that schools record progress towards meeting these standards across all three termly reports. Monitoring of these reports by the Appropriate Body (LA) acts as an alert for potential issues and school options regarding further support.
As part of the Quality Assurance process all schools must ensure that uploaded reports on NQT Manager are digitally signed and that all NQTs add a short comment to the report form.
Finally, it is essential to register your NQT with the Appropriate Body on appointment www.norfolk.nqtmanager.com. Failure to register could delay the successful completion of the induction period. |
