Changes to the administration of your school's copyright licence from the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA)

Please be advised that from April 2013 there will be some changes to the administration of your school's copyright licence from the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA), as well as some additional copyright coverage that you need to make your staff aware of.

The CLA Licence

The CLA Schools Licence provides blanket coverage for your school to use extracts of text and pictures from millions of print and digital books, journals and magazines, including websites.

Your CLA Licence will no longer be administered by the Local Authority. The Department for Education (DfE) will be responsible for managing the administration of all state-maintained schools in England from April 2013. If you have any queries about your CLA Licence, you should direct them to CLA and not to your local authority. Please see the CLA website for details: www.schools.cla.co.uk or you can email education.customers@cla.co.uk or phone 020 7400 3124.

Your school is required to nominate a Licence Co-ordinator who will act as a point of contact for CLA with regards to disseminating information about the licence terms and conditions and (at a maximum of once every three years) helping to arrange a data collection exercise. This would usually be a member of the senior management team or head of learning resources. You will be contacted in due course to provide this information.

The new Schools Printed Music Licence (SPML)

Until now, whenever schools needed to make copies of printed music, they had to contact the publisher directly to seek permission. From April 2013, a blanket licence will be available from Printed Music Licensing Ltd and CLA has exclusive rights to manage the Schools Printed Music Licence on their behalf. CLA has negotiated to include the SPML in the new arrangement with the DfE so state-maintained schools in England will benefit from the rights and repertoire offered by the SPML with absolutely no financial or administrative inconvenience.

You are required to make your staff aware of the terms and conditions of the Schools Printed Music Licence. Please find information and guidance, as well as the full licence document, on the CLA schools website: www.schools.cla.co.uk Any queries about the SPML should be directed to CLA's customer services: education.customers@cla.co.uk or 020 7400 3124.
