Reform of the National Curriculum in England

How much do you know about the content of the new National Curriculum?

Did you know, for example, that

  • In History, the focus is firmly on British history and takes a chronological approach from stone age man for 7 years olds through to the Cold War at the end of key stage 3? Nothing beyond the eighteenth century is taught in primary schools.
  • The newly statutory key stage 2 languages curriculum specifies the teaching of French, German, Italian, Spanish, Mandarin, Latin or Ancient Greek. The inclusion of ancient languages is ‘to provide a linguistic foundation for learning modern languages and for reading comprehension’. High schools are expected to build on this work undertaken in Key Stage 2.
  • It is proposed ICT is replaced by Computing to reflect the greater emphasis on practical programming skills. This could be statutory from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 4.
  • Citizenship is in the curriculum for Key Stages 3 and 4.

  • The consultation on this document is currently live, but will end on 16 April 2013. As always, we would want to encourage the maximum number of people to take part in the consultation.

This is your last chance to have your say over the content of the curriculum and whether or not it is workable.

To take part, follow the links to the reform of the National Curriculum on the DfE website.
Other timelines remain in place. They are:
  • Autumn 2013 draft proposals for the National Curriculum published.

  • Autumn 2014 – maintained schools expected to implement the new curriculum.

  • Training and support for schools
Schools can be assured that Norfolk Integrated Education Services (NIEAS) will have an array of professional development activities to inform and up skill teachers and leaders across all relevant phases of education, in the light of any changes. Joining a NIEAS subject professional network is one way to ensure that your school subject leaders are kept up to date.
