School Driven Initial Teacher Training - Expressions of interest required by the National College for Teaching and Leadership

As you are probably aware, Initial Teacher Training is becoming increasingly school-based and school-driven. This includes the way in which trainee places are allocated. Last year, the timing of the announcements about 'School Direct' at the end of the summer term left little time for schools to bid for training places. However, this year schools can register their interest much earlier by clicking here.

Please register your interest as soon as possible, if you have not already done so, with a view to your school hosting 'School Direct' trainees for the year September 2014 - July 2015? My understanding is that no commitment is required at this stage but there is a need to register.

As a reminder, there are two types of School Direct training places:

  • 'School Direct Tuition Fees' where places are funded through tuition fees and a grant is paid to schools to assist with placement costs;
  • 'School Direct Salaried' where trainees earn salary as they train and may teach their own classes, rather as instructors do.

In the latter case, Suffolk & Norfolk ITT has worked out a financial package whereby the school is actually 'in pocket' by the end of training.

We hope that having registered your interest you will want to name Suffolk & Norfolk ITT as your ITT provider. As you probably know, at our last Ofsted inspection all our provision was graded at least 'Good' and much of it as 'Outstanding'. Not only that but our trainee qualifying grades are high (well above 50% Outstanding across our programmes) and employment outcomes are in excess of 90%.

We are currently in discussion with University Campus Suffolk to increase our offer to all our trainees to receive a Post Graduate Certificate and 60 Masters level credits in addition to Qualified Teacher Status. These qualifications will be validated through University of East Anglia and University of Essex.

If you are currently a partnership school hosting 'core allocation' or 'School Direct' Suffolk and Norfolk ITT trainees, thank you very much for doing so. If you are not hosting a trainee (which may be for a variety of reasons) and would like to do so next year, please do get in touch by telephone on 01473 265080 or by emailing SNITT.
