Free Briefing Events for Norfolk Schools: Child Sexual Exploitation
In response to the National Action Plan for tackling child sexual exploitation, a sub-group of the Norfolk Safeguarding Children Board (NSCB) has been established to bring together local agencies in order look at ways to protect children in Norfolk from this largely hidden form of child abuse.
Schools are well placed to prevent, identify and respond to children at risk of sexual exploitation. A series of free briefing events for schools have been organised during the Autumn Term 2013 to raise awareness of Child Sexual Exploitation and the new NSCB multi-agency practice guidelines.
Delegates will have an opportunity to explore the issues of sexual violence with speakers from Norfolk Constabulary, Children's Services Multi-agency Safeguarding Hub and the Magdalene Group. The session will assist and support schools to identify ways to prevent young people becoming victims of child sexual exploitation. Resources and sources of support will be identified in order to support young people to assess and manage risk and keep themselves safe.
Who should attend? It is important that each Secondary School makes arrangements for at least one representative to attend one of the sessions. The briefings are also relevant for Primary colleagues. Research indicates that children of primary school age can also be vulnerable to this type of abuse. Primary Schools also play an important role in prevention.
Aims: To ensure that Norfolk schools have a full understanding of the Norfolk Safeguarding Children Board multi-agency guidance for the managing cases of Child Sexual Exploitation and the key resources available for both schools and young people to access.
Objectives:
- Explain the profile of victims of sexual violence identified in Norfolk
- Raise awareness of resources available locally to assist schools to identify and respond appropriately to cases of Child Sexual Exploitation
- Explain the Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) and referral pathways for victims of abuse
- Identify appropriate resources to promote healthy relationships through the curriculum
