Careers Convention (with Build Norfolk)

Location: Norfolk Showground

Date: 28 November 2014

Time: 9:30am - 2.30pm

A message from Mick Castle (Cabinet Member for Schools, Norfolk County Council).

On 28 November 2013 there is a very exciting opportunity for young people which has been developed with our colleagues in the Employment and Skills team, together with local employers.

'Choose Your Future' is an inspiring and interactive careers convention for young people from year 9 and upwards which will give them a real taste of 4 business sectors that offer some of the most exciting job and career opportunities right here in Norfolk.

The event will focus on

  • energy and engineering (supported by OPITO and the Nexus Centre)
  • construction (supported by Build Norfolk
  • manufacturing

These sectors offer superb opportunities for young people, yet the opportunities and more importantly the pathways into them are perhaps not so obvious. In the current economic climate, the Norfolk economy has been relatively successful. Many of the businesses in these sectors struggle to engage with schools and/or students yet they can offer quality employment in a stable and supportive environment. Real job prospects are going begging and often, businesses have to look beyond Norfolk to fill vacancies.

This is an opportunity for young people to learn about what's out there, to gain real hands on experience from the interactive displays, to meet young people who have already recently tread the same path and to get impartial careers information and advice.

Previously, conventions have been held separately for each sector, but having listened to feedback from schools that it is hard to attend more than one event some of them have been bought together where they are complementary. The event will be held during school hours (9.30am - 2.30pm) on Thursday 28 November at the Norfolk Showground.

Please support this event and help in influencing headteachers to collapse the timetable for the day so that teachers and students can easily attend. The cost of transport can sometimes be prohibitive so grants have been put in place to help with this, the attached flyer gives more information. Thank you for your support, however, if you have more questions please contact Mark Baxter at Moore Networking, who are organising the event, on 01263 735486 or go to www.buildnorfolk.co.uk/events and click on the Events tab.
