System Leadership - building capacity for school to school support in Norfolk

You will be aware of the suite of pamphlets published by the LA to give detail on our refreshed approach to school improvement, 'A Good School for Every Norfolk Learner'. Please click here to view the new pamphlet which is now available on 'system leadership'.

System leadership is central to the overall vision of a self-improving school system, where schools, federations, clusters of schools, stand alone academies and multi-academy trusts and chains take collective responsibility for leading, co-ordinating and delivering sustainable improvement. The national expectation is that all schools will make a contribution in their locality or beyond.

The pamphlet expresses a clear rationale for system leadership. It explains what the nationally designated roles are, what they involve, how you can apply and the current number of leaders accredited within Norfolk.

The pamphlet also explains what the local system leadership roles in Norfolk are, what they involve and how to register your interest in fulfilling one or more of these. Each role can be classified either as specific designation or a collaborative enterprise that facilitates strong partnerships to expand capacity for system leadership.

The pamphlet considers some of the main incentives and barriers to system leadership, including moral and professional motivations and capacity issues. It cites compelling evidence of the impact of school to school support in Norfolk not only for those in receipt of support but also for those who provide it. It challenges all school leaders to identify what their contribution will be towards school improvement in the local or wider area and to respond by registering their intent with the LA as soon as possible.
