Norfolk Secondary Schools Survey for LGBT History Month - February 2014

Your school is invited to take part in this survey about homophobia and transphobia in secondary schools in Norfolk. The survey has been designed to complement the Ofsted guidance 'Exploring school's actions to prevent homophobic and transphobic bullying' and it will provide your school with the data that fits their investigations.

The survey will help you understand:

  • how much homophobic and transphobic language is used in your school
  • what pupils in your school think is acceptable language and what they consider offensive or bullying
  • the extent of homophobic and transphobic bullying in your school
  • what pupils think of what your school teaches them about the lives of gay, bi-sexual and transgender people
  • the extent to which homophobic and transphobic language is challenged by teachers and pupils in your school
  • what pupils think your school could do to tackle homophobic and transphobic bullying

The survey is a free, online questionnaire devised by Norfolk County Council. The questions are based on the information that Ofsted ask for and surveys used in other parts of the country. This survey is for all pupils in years 7 - 11. There is a separate survey about homophobia for pupils in years 5 - 6.

The survey will be available for pupils to complete between Monday 3rd February to Friday 21st March. It coincides well with LGBT History Month which runs nationally throughout February.

The survey offers pupils an opportunity to contribute to a serious whole-school issue and one that this government and Ofsted have made it clear they wish to address. Participating schools will receive their school's results, together with a county-wide comparison comprising the aggregated results for all other schools. The results will provide an invaluable insight that can be used to assess and review the effectiveness of the school's anti-bullying policy and for self-evaluation towards an Ofsted Inspection (see p.18 - Latest Ofsted Framework for School Inspection).

Please join with other Norfolk schools in completing the survey. If you wish to discuss the survey please do not hesitate to contact Rita Adair on 01603 307567 or email: rita.adair@norfolk.gov.uk. Attached is an information sheet which provides further details, including instructions on how to participate, and a copy of the questionnaire. Please ensure this and the step by step guide is passed to relevant staff as they will need these instructions to run the survey.
