Primary Spaces: Improving outdoor PE and sport facilities
Sport England's new £18m Lottery funded primary school facilities fund, Primary Spaces, is officially live as of Monday 24 February. This fund builds on and compliments the Government's Primary PE and Sport Premium.
The fund will help provide outdoor multi-activity areas which can be used both within the curriculum and out of school hours. As well as helping provide sports facilities, staff and volunteers at the school will receive information on how best to use the new facilities.
Whilst Sport England want to help as many schools as possible, they anticipate making awards to c600 schools. Schools can apply for up to £30,000 and priority will be given to those primary schools that have little or no outside space which can currently be used for PE, sport or activity sessions.
Schools receiving funding will select from a number of components and options which can be easily incorporated into small spaces on primary school sites. They are designed to be added to current playground areas to significantly enhance them, helping schools make the best of the available space and therefore increase the impact of the Primary PE and Sport Premium funding.
It is their aspiration that the fund will help schools make good use of relatively small spaces and provide facilities which are low cost but provide a degree of enclosure, colour and innovation that will:
- Inspire physical activity and participation by young people
- Enable and encourage healthy activity
- Develop the foundations of a sporting habit for life through a great start in PE and sport
All of the information on the project will be available from Mon 24 Feb on the Sport England website; www.sportengland.org/primaryspaces
