To end all wars - Norfolk's WW1 schools programme
Schools across Norfolk are getting the chance to step back in time and find out about day-to-day life during the First World War as part of a major new centenary learning programme.
The new website-based programme will reveal the stories of six people who originated from, lived in or worked in the county during the period and focus on the cultural, social and economic conditions on the ground and the impact of war at an individual and community level. The programme will enable young people to understand the significance of remembrance, the role of commemoration and offer them some connection to these events that so removed from their own experience.
The learning programme will be aimed at Key Stages 1-4 and will include case studies, historical materials, questions/activities and a toolkit for schools to start their own investigations into local heroes. The website will be created as a resource for teachers and a place where schools can upload and share some of the work they have completed.
As well as the learning programme, six school groups will also have the opportunity to work with specialist artists to create pieces to be performed on stage in a show entitled To End All Wars at Norwich Theatre Royal on Friday August 1.
The Heritage Lottery Fund has backed the scheme with over £67,000 worth of funding, topped up with a £3000 grant from Norfolk County Council.
The entire programme will be officially unveiled to teachers at a special reception at Norwich Theatre Royal on Friday March 28, from 10.30am. This launch event will give the opportunity for teachers to see and learn more about the website, ask questions and share ideas with colleagues. There will also be afternoon drop in sessions at Norwich Castle, Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library and the Norfolk Record Office to see historical evidence first hand and learn how to use these resources.
