Recent reports in the media about 'Nek Nominations'

You may have seen recent reports in the media about ‘Nek Nominations’. People are encouraged to film themselves drinking concoctions of alcohol and other substances and post these videos on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. They then nominate others to do the same. When young people are nominated, there is a strong social pressure on them to drink such mixtures and to nominate others.

There have been reports and footage which show some people going on to drink other harmful substances and/or find themselves in vulnerable situations while under the influence of alcohol. At least three deaths have been reported as a result of involvement in this activity.

Some Secondary Schools have become aware of pupil discussions and participation in these activities in Key Stages 3-5. We know that some students have posted themselves doing a “Nek Nomination” and a worrying number of students say that they have been nominated. Some are feeling considerable peer pressure to get involved.

Archbishop Sancroft High School has written a letter to parents outlining concerns regarding this practice and has kindly agreed to share this template letter for other Secondary Schools to issue as they feel appropriate.
