New staff appointments in Children's Services

The following provides an update on new staff appointments in the Education section of Norfolk Children's Services.

Education Inclusion Service

The Local Authority's new Education Inclusion Service will bring together all of the LA's work in attendance, exclusions, guidance, participation and SEN. The new service will work closely with the School Admissions Service and the Education Achievement Service in promoting high achievement for our more vulnerable children and young people. The new service – that will sit within the range of Education services – arises from the current re-structure of the County Council's Children's Services Department.

Following national advert, a rigorous selection process has been undertaken over the last week to appoint a Head of Service. Representatives of the Headteacher Associations (NASSH, NSEL and NPHA) together with a representative from Further Education were fully involved in shortlisting and interviewing.

Michael Bateman has been appointed to the post and he will take up his new role as soon as possible. In the meantime, he will be undertaking a period of induction including spending time in various schools to gain a sense of education inclusion in practice.

More details will follow about the new service but in the meantime we wish Michael the very best of luck as he prepares to lead a significant new service that will bring many benefits to our children, young people and their families.

Norfolk Integrated Education Advisory Services (NIEAS)

NIEAS has also made two key appointments. Samantha Penn, currently Principal of Ormiston Endeavour Academy in Ipswich, will lead the Teaching and Learning team from 1 April, 2015. In the interim John Woodhouse is leading the Teaching and Learning Service following Heather Tyrrell's departure in December. Kevin Holland, formerly Director of Learning at Ipswich Academy, started this term as an Education Adviser specialising in PE.

Education Achievement Service

Following the appointment of John Crowley to Senior Adviser in the Education Achievement Service with responsibility for Assessment, Amanda Lowe (formerly an Adviser within NIEAS) has joined the Service from January 2015 to take the day to day lead on Assessment and Early Years Foundation Stage data.
