Guidance on identifying and supporting those believed to be Vulnerable to Radicalisation or Influenced by Extremism
You will have seen the media coverage recently concerning the three London-based school girls thought to be on route to Syria. In the light of this and the call for greater awareness in schools and colleges about identifying and supporting children who may be vulnerable to radicalisation we are re-issuing our advice and guidance on the matter. We thought this would be helpful and that it would ensure that schools in Norfolk have access to the procedures relating to such concerns.
This may be a theme in forthcoming Ofsted inspections so ensuring that the Senior Leadership Team, the Senior Designated Professional and governors are aware would be a positive step.
The PREVENT (Vulnerable to Radicalisation) procedures attached will provide you with further guidance about indicators of concern and the steps to take if you are concerned about an individual who may be at risk of being adversely influenced or radicalised.
On 18 December 2014, the Home Office published for consultation, draft guidance on the Prevent duty. This duty is part of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Bill, which will apply to a wide range of bodies supporting children and young people, including schools and sixth form colleges. The Prevent duty will reinforce existing duties for keeping children safe by spreading understanding of the risks and current good practice across the country. Full details of the draft guidance and proposed responsibilities is available at: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/prevent-duty.
Children’s Services and Norfolk Constabulary staff are currently working in partnership to provide additional training and guidance for schools in this area. Further details will be published in due course.
