Under Schedule 66 (5) of the Deregulation Act 2015, the governing body of each maintained school now has the responsibility to set school term and holiday dates. This provides the outcome of our consultation about adopting a Norfolk model calendar.

Thank you to everyone who responded to our consultation on a proposed Norfolk Model calendar of term dates for 2016-17. The results demonstrated that:

• Of the 60 responses received, 82% agreed that there should be a standard pattern of dates for all Norfolk schools, 17% disagreed and 1% neither agreed nor disagreed. Over 50% of respondents were parents with 48% being members of staff, the balance were residents and governors.
• Of these, 56% agreed that the dates as adopted by our neighbouring local authorities should be adopted by Norfolk, whilst 40% disagreed and 4% did not answer.

The Norfolk Model calendar is attached and identifies the 190 pupil days when school transport will be provided. Three staff professional development days are included, and the remaining two days should be selected from pupil holiday periods or disaggregated to after school sessions.

If you decide not to adopt the Norfolk Model, you will need to complete your own consultation exercise with parents and other stakeholders. If your final calendar has any impact on the provision of school transport, the school will be charged for directly for any additional costs incurred by the County Council. The school will be charged for the full days cost of their transport if open on any day that is not a recognised school day on the Norfolk model calendar, even if this means that the school is closed on a different day. This is because transport is integrated between schools and other services and so additional transport costs will be incurred is schools open and close on different days.
