Book a front row seat for England’s biggest free first aid lesson

Learning first aid in school with training from St John Ambulance

Join The Big First Aid Lesson and in the space of just one hour, your students could learn first aid skills which could stay with them for a lifetime.

At 2 pm, on 12 June, we’ll be holding the Big First Aid Lesson, a free one hour online first aid session streamed live and direct into classrooms across the country. Our interactive programme combines first aid training and 999 scenarios with amazing real life stories, as well as plenty of opportunities for your students to join the conversation.

This year's event will be hosted by Strictly Come Dancing presenter, Claudia Winkleman.

Be part of the Big First Aid Lesson

As well as learning the skills to save a life, your school could also star in The Big First Aid Lesson.

Throughout the programme, we’ll be linking up with schools across the country on Google Hangouts to find out how they’re getting on with the lesson.

The team in the studio will also be on hand to answer the best questions from the comments section of The Big First Aid Lesson’s webpage, and read out posts featuring the hashtag #bigfirstaidlesson on Twitter and Facebook.

Teaching students life-saving skills

We’ve created The Big First Aid Lesson to make it easier for you to teach first aid. It’s a great introduction for your students, or if they already know some first aid, a brilliant way of refreshing their skills.

Launched in 2014, the event was a big success, with 32,384 students taking part and learning life saving first aid skills.

By streaming our first aid lesson straight into the classroom, thousands of children were able to learn first aid skills for free, without leaving their desks, so they would know what to do if a classmate, friend or family member needs help.

How to take part

• The Big First Aid Lesson will be streamed live on our website, and a recording will be made available to watch again after the event. All schools will need is an internet connection and a screen (such as an interactive whiteboard) for their students to watch
• The programme has been designed for students aged between 7 and 16 years old
• It’s free to tune in, but we recommend that you register on our website beforehand. That way, we’ll be able to keep you posted about what we’re planning, and let you know of other St John Ambulance schools resources that might be relevant to you

Bringing first aid to the classroom

We believe everyone should get the chance to learn first aid.

First aid is so easy to learn and has an incredible impact. But because it’s not compulsory on the National Curriculum, only a minority of schoolchildren told us they’d know what to do if one of their classmates, or a member of their family was injured. In fact, across the country, nearly 60% of children have no first aid training whatsoever.*

As the nation’s leading first aid charity, we’re committed to holding events like The Big First Aid Lesson, and providing people who wouldn’t normally get the chance to learn with access to training and skills.
