New Health and Safety Training for Headteachers

Headteachers are responsible for health and safety management in their schools. They have, up to now, had to attend a number of health and safety and premises management courses over two and a half days to gain a full picture of the nature and extent of their health and safety responsibilities.

Because of this it has been particularly difficult for new head teachers to quickly become competent to lead health and safety management and, if they choose, to delegate elements of the health and safety management responsibility to members of their staff.

This MI sheet introduces a new one-day course for head teachers on their core health and safety management responsibilities.

The course is designed for new heads, heads who are new to Norfolk schools and heads who may wish to delegate health and responsibility.

Action

All new headteachers and those new to Norfolk schools should attend the new course: Health and Safety Management for Headteachers. This can be found in the document G502e Health and Safety Training for Schools 2015-16 which is on Schools‘PeopleNet in the Management section on the Health and Safety pages under Useful Documents at the link above.

Existing headteachers who would like to refresh their knowledge or increase their competence in health and safety leadership should also attend.

Headteachers may wish to attend with the staff to whom they intend to delegate duties, eg deputy heads, school business managers and senior caretakers.

It is not recommended though that they send others to represent them as the course is about the head’s role as a leader in the major health and safety management issues in schools rather than the technical details of health and safety hazards – these are covered in other existing courses.

The next two courses will be held on: 4 June 2015 and 8 July 2015.

Booking should be made via HR Direct on: (01603 222212).
