Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) Induction 2015/16
Norfolk Appropriate Body (NAB) continues to offer a service designed to attract Newly Qualified Teachers to the area, meet local need and give NQTs the best experience and support on offer. For details of our support package, please see link to service provision. I am happy to advise costs will not increase for the academic year 2015/16.
Registering Your NQT
All maintained schools who have appointed an NQT have a statutory obligation to appoint an Appropriate Body to monitor and accredit NQT Induction in accordance with statutory guidance 2.21 and 2.24:
2.21 An NQT cannot start their induction until their appropriate body has been agreed.
2.24 Once an NQT has been appointed, the head teacher must notify the appropriate body in advance of the NQT taking up post. Failure to do so may delay the start of the induction period.
Before you register your NQT, please check the following:
- The NQT has QTS and is eligible to start induction
- The NQT's post is a suitable post in accordance with statutory guidance 2.17. This is particularly important for NQTs serving their induction in non-standard settings. Guidance for non-standard settings (eg Special Schools, PRU, etc.) is downloadable from the Resources section of NQT Manager.
- Complete self-evaluation (downloadable from the Resources section of NQT Manager) when recruiting an NQT or annually, whichever is most recent.
Recruitment of NQTS
Careful consideration should be taken before committing to recruiting an NQT. Please see link to Guidance for recruiting NQTs.
- Schools judged as 'requiring improvement' should consider carefully their capacity to support an NQT
Overseas Trained Teachers
From 1 April 2012 qualified teachers from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA can apply to the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) for QTS without undertaking further training or assessment in England. You must have QTS to take up a teaching post in a locally maintained school in England. Teachers must apply to NCTL for the award of QTS before they can be recognised as qualified teachers.
To apply, complete an online application form on the NCTL website. The NCTL will then verify that the individual is a fully qualified teacher in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA and has not been barred from teaching. Subject to satisfactory completion of these checks the teacher will be issued with a letter confirming the award of QTS. Details will then be held on the database of qualified teachers in England. Once these conditions have been satisfied the teacher is exempt from induction.
Training
Details of training for NQTs and mentors can be booked via NQT Manager.
