Safeguarding Updates 2016 and further Prevent Training dates
Staff Code of Conduct
'Guidance for safer working practice for those working with children and young people in education settings' was updated in October 2015 and replaces the previous version published by the DCSF in 2009. The document provides staff with practical guidance about which behaviours constitute safe practice and which behaviours should be avoided.
In line with 'Keeping Children Safe in Education, schools are required to have a staff code of conduct/staff behaviour policy that is supplied to all staff at induction. This safe working practice document is not statutory guidance from the DfE but it does provide a useful basis for a school code of conduct/staff behaviour guidelines.
'Keeping children safe in education': Government consultation
On 22 December, the Department for Education (DfE) launched a consultation on proposed changes to the statutory guidance 'Keeping Children Safe in Education'. The proposed changes include:-
- Changes to the "Summary" to reinforce the importance of Part One as a starting point for all staff in schools and colleges to read and understand;
- Increasing the focus on the importance of a child centred and coordinated approach to safeguarding;
- Emphasising further the role that individual staff play in safeguarding and the fact it is everyone's responsibility;
- Highlighting the importance of early help and how it sits in the wider safeguarding system;
- Highlighting the importance of data sharing;
- Clarification on the role of the designated safeguarding lead and cover for the role;
- A new section to cover online safety;
- Aligning and clarifying training requirements for the designated safeguarding lead and staff;
- Updating the inspection section to reflect the Ofsted framework; and
- A new section covering children with special educational needs and disabilities.
The results of the consultation and the Department's response will be published in Spring 2016 with a view to the revised guidance coming into effect for the beginning of the new school year in September 2016.
Prevent Awareness
In order to support schools to fulfil the responsibilities outlined in the Prevent Duty Guidance, further Workshops to Raise Awareness of Prevent (WRAP) have been organised for the Spring Term 2016 with Glen Hagger, Safeguarding Training Adviser. The DfE guidance states that 'as a minimum, however, schools should ensure that the Designated Safeguarding Lead undertakes Prevent awareness training and is able to provide advice and support to other members of staff on protecting children from the risk of radicalisation'. In addition to the workshop, DSLs that attend the training will be provided with further resources including a model policy, training materials and guidance to cascade to staff.
