Asbestos insulation board (AIB) was found behind wooden beading during replacement of a pane of fire glass in an internal wall of a school. The layers of paint on the wooden beading had concealed the join between the beading and a thin section of AIB which surrounded the edge of the frame.

As a result of this incident, the process for considering whether additional asbestos surveying is necessary (detailed in section 5.4 of the Asbestos Management Policy) should be followed during fire glass replacement. The Asbestos Management Survey does not detail information about asbestos-containing materials that have been used below surface materials.
