Updata School Connectivity Services - Netsweeper Web Filtering Migration
Further to the Updata Spring Newsletter, your current Smoothwall filtering is being migrated over to Netsweeper Web Filtering by the 30th September 2016.
Netsweeper internet filtering platform will include the following features:
- Customisable specific URL whitelists and blacklists catering for filtering specific URLs
- Customisable URL filtering for specific domains
- Filtering based on content that is grouped into specific categories based on the Netsweeper global categorisation engine
Timeline for Migration:

| w/c 19th September | Schools with local filtering appliances migrated |
| w/c 19th September | For schools who wish to manage your own filtering within your school, you will receive account details and start up guide in preparation for migration next week. These will be sent to the nominated contacts supplied on your declaration. |
| 27th September 8.00 am | All schools who have migrated to the Updata WAN will be migrated to Netsweeper filtering |
| 28th September 8.00 am | School who have yet to be migrated to Updata WAN (i.e. still on the old BT network) will be migrated to the Netsweeper filtering |
If you wish to migrate across to the Netsweeper filtering earlier than the dates above, please contact the School Applications team on schoolapps@norfolk.gov.uk and we can arrange this for you.
What will be migrated across from Smoothwall?
The migration activity will be completed for you by Updata and ICT Shared Services. This will include:
- You will be migrated on the profile level you requested in the Google Form submitted by your school.
- Any block/unblock URL's already set up in your Smoothwall SWURL will be migrated across for you.
Action required to continue using Https (i.e. You Tube, Twitter) post migration:
If you wish to use http sites post migration you will need to have a SSL certificate installed onto your devices.
- For schools with ICT Shared Services technician support this will be completed for you.
- For schools using an alternative ICT Support company, please follow the enclosed link to install your SSL certificate.
Phase 2 - Granular Filtering:
We are currently planning phase 2 of the Netsweeper rollout which will include the options for:
- Granular filtering at student and staff level
- Active Directory integration for granular filtering at individual level
