Moderation dates and the Norfolk LA Teacher Assessment and Moderation Handbook

Moderation

EYFS

All schools being moderated in 2017 will receive notification on Monday 27th March 2017.

Schools will be informed by telephone call, followed by an email to office@ FAO the Headteacher. This email will include the relevant information relating to the moderation process.

Following notification, schools must submit pupil data to the LA, via the form provided in Perspective, by 3rd May 2017. This data is used for selecting pupils for moderation. The sample selected will be communicated to schools, via Perspective, the working day before the moderation appointment.

LA moderation will take place between 5th May 2017 - 26th May 2017 at the Norwich PDC or at the West Norfolk PDC.

Further information can be found on the Norfolk Schools site and in the Norfolk LA Teacher Assessment and Moderation Handbook, sent out to all schools week commencing 27th February 2017, via Perspective.

Pupil selection

In single-form entry schools the LA will moderate 17 ELGs from the class. They would expect to see some 'emerging', some 'expected' and some 'exceeding' outcomes from across the 5 children. In a multi-form entry school the LA will ensure that all 17 ELGs are moderated. At least one judgement at each of the 3 outcome levels from each practitioner within the sample should be seen.

Schools not selected for LA moderation can book a place on an Agreement Trialling half day training session. The areas of learning for this year are Communication and Language, and Mathematics. Below are the course codes and they can be booked via the following link: www.s4s.norfolk.gov.uk/Training from Monday 27th March 2017. The charge will be £30 per delegate.

EYFS

The evidence base used to make the judgements against the EYFS Early Learning Goals for the pupils in the sample, eg learning journeys

KS1

  • The marked test papers for maths and reading (teachers can also bring the marked GPS test, if they choose to administer this)
  • Judgements made against the interim teacher assessment frameworks (B, WTS, EXS, GDS) for all pupils in the cohort, for reading, writing and maths. This is a new requirement for 2017.
  • The evidence base used to make the judgements for the pupils in the sample for reading, writing or maths, depending on the subject area they have been selected for. Evidence of pupil performance should be derived from normal classroom practice across the curriculum. Teachers should not set specific tasks to generate evidence for moderation or produce portfolios of pupils' work in preparation for an external moderation visit.

KS2

  • Judgements made against the interim teacher assessment framework (B, WTS, EXS, GDS) for all pupils in the cohort, for writing. This is a new requirement for 2017.
  • The evidence base used to make the judgements for the pupils for writing. Evidence of pupil performance should be derived from normal classroom practice across the curriculum. Teachers should not set specific tasks to generate evidence for moderation or produce portfolios of pupils' work in preparation for an external moderation visit.

Norfolk Achievement Service Teacher Assessment and Moderation Handbook

All schools will have received a copy of the Norfolk Teacher Assessment and Moderation Handbook via their Perspective account the week commencing 27th February 2017. The handbook can also be found via the following link:

www.schools.norfolk.gov.uk/

The handbook outlines teacher assessment at EYFS, KS1 and KS2. These sections include clarification for independent writing and the 'some', 'many', 'most' criteria, along with other key important information all schools should know before assessing pupils against the EYFS Profile and the Interim Teacher Assessment Frameworks at KS1 and KS2. Please ensure that all teachers responsible for the end of Key Stage assessments have also had sight of the information contained within this handbook.

Along with guidance on teacher assessment, the handbook outlines the Norfolk LA moderation processes for EYFS, KS1 and KS2.

The appendices of the handbook contain data checking support, submission codes for TA and tests and the paperwork that you will receive at moderation.

Please note that on p.21, it states for KS1 that (Final DfE submission 30th June 2017). This date is incorrect and should read 29th June 2017.

KS2 training for the Greater Depth judgement

Educator Solutions have organised further training opportunities to give all Year 6 teachers further support with judging the Greater Depth standard for writing. These will take place at the end of April 2017 and can be found by searching GDS. The training can be booked via the following link: www.s4s.norfolk.gov.uk/Training.

There will be a particular focus on 'managing shifts in formality' as teachers must ensure that the shifts are managed effectively and take place on more than one occasion within a relevant pieces of writing.
