A number of schools have received the following request for information under the Freedom of Information Act:

Under the FOI Act please can you let me know your orginsations budget for:

• 2016
• 2017

This is the total operating budget for your orginsation across all departments etc

This is a valid FOI request. You will need to issue a formal response under FOI. You have 20 working days to complete the request.

If you have published your budgets on your website, you will want to consider linking the requester to that information, although you will need to ensure that any response is set out formally and explains the appeal process etc. as per the guidance available on the ICO website. If not, you will need to gather this information, consider whether there is any legal basis for withholding the information, and release as appropriate. Schools are data controllers in their own rights, so are responsible for responding to FOI requests that they receive, as well as for deciding what information they feel should be released, and what information they consider exempt.
