Ofsted updates

Consultation regarding short inspections of good schools

Ofsted has initiated a consultation regarding short inspections of good schools from October 2017. This proposes:

  • When a short inspection is converted to a section 5 inspection, an inspection team will return to the school within 15 working days to complete the inspection (unless the inspection has raised safeguarding concerns where the expectation is that the inspection will be completed within 48 hours).
  • Some good schools will be scheduled for a section 5 inspection, not a short inspection, where Ofsted's regional intelligence and risk assessment process indicate there is a need to collect more evidence than would routinely be gathered on a short inspection to reach a judgement about a school.

Ofsted would welcome your views so please participate and make them known by responding to this consultation:

Ofsted Webinar for schools in the East of England - 3rd July, 4.00pm - 5.30 pm

This will be an excellent opportunity for leaders, governors and teachers to understand better what Ofsted is looking for when it inspects leadership and management. To register please use the following link:

Ofsted Curriculum survey

Ofsted is currently undertaking survey visits across the country to gather information about the curriculum and we know that these visits are happening in Norfolk. Sean Harford has indicated that:

  • Schools should know their curriculum design and intent
  • Know how their curriculum is being implemented
  • Know what impact their curriculum is having on pupils' knowledge and understanding

Further information about Ofsted's review of the curriculum can be found in the text of HMCI's recent speech at the Festival of Education:

LA Duty Desk - 01603 307797

As well as being the initial contact number for LADO enquiries, the LA Duty Desk should be contacted if you are notified that you are going to be visited by Ofsted. This is the case for all schools, whether you are LA-maintained, an academy or independent. The Duty Adviser will be able to support you through the preparation process and speak to inspectors during the inspection if required.
