Operation Encompass Progress Report

Operation Encompass Progress Report

Please find attached a report summarising the roll-out of Operation Encompass within Norfolk during the academic year 2016-17.

Key Facts:

  • 93% of schools in Norfolk attended an Operation Encompass Briefing during the academic year.
  • By the end of the academic year 2016/17, 341 (78%) schools had signed up to Operation Encompass.
  • 1092 notifications were made to schools in Norfolk during this period.
  • 99% of schools surveyed would recommend Operation Encompass to another school.

Schools not signed up

If you are a maintained school, academy or free school in Norfolk that has not signed up to receive Operation Encompass notifications, a further briefing has been organised at 9:30am on 25 September 2017 at Norwich Professional Development Centre. Please e-mail cs.pdcsafeguardingadministration@norfolk.gov.uk if you would like to attend this briefing.

There are 65 schools who have sent a member of staff to a briefing but have not returned the paperwork to receive notifications. If this is the case in your school, you are not required to attend a further briefing session but in order to receive notifications you must inform parents using the template letter provided and return the required paperwork via e-mail to: mashda@norfolk.gcsx.gov.uk

Further training opportunities

Feedback received from the Operation Encompass survey completed in June 2017 and via the safeguarding self-review process has indicated that some schools have identified a need for further training about domestic abuse. In response, the Norfolk Domestic Abuse Change Co-ordinators will be offering Domestic Abuse Champion Training to schools/clusters of schools in the forthcoming academic year with the aim to have at least one trained Domestic Abuse Champion in every Norfolk school.

The Domestic Abuse Champions Course is aimed at any professionals who come into contact with domestic abuse. On average 1/5 children in the UK are exposed to domestic abuse, with children aged 16-19 being the most likely victims of abuse. Schools are therefore in a prime position to both recognise domestic abuse and support children who might be detrimentally affected.

By the end of day one professionals will have an understanding of domestic abuse and power and control methods perpetrators use on victims. By the end of day two professionals will have a better knowledge in how to support victims of abuse, considering their own schools policies and procedures on domestic abuse, and what support themselves and colleagues are entitled to. They will have a better knowledge of the educational toolkits that can be used in schools and local support agencies to refer victims and children to for support.

We have organised this two day course on 30 November and 7 December 2017 at Norwich Professional Development Centre. The course is limited to 24 spaces and can be booked via S4S using course code: TLS-1117-T065. The course is offered free of charge but please note that no refreshments will be provided.

If you would like to organise domestic abuse training within your cluster or academy Trust please contact the Domestic Abuse Change Co-ordinators, Zoe Harding and Christen Williams to discuss this via e-mail: da.change@norfolk.gov.uk
