Performance & Pay Reviews for Advanced Skills Teachers

From Brenda Emmott AST LEA Co-ordinator

Performance and pay reviews for Advanced Skills Teachers

Over the last few years we have jointly achieved considerable success in creating and promoting teachers to the post of Advanced Skills Teacher. As they remain in post they will need to progress up their five point pay spine. There are two ways in which Advanced Skills Teachers can have their pay reviewed and they draw on different funding streams.

The first is based on a review of the Advanced Skills Teacher's performance. No movement up the pay spine can take place unless there has been a sustained high quality of performance (including any outreach work) in the light of performance criteria previously agreed between the Governing Body and the Advanced Skills Teacher. It should be noted that the funding of performance related pay is not funded through the Standards Fund, but rather through the Performance Related Pay grant. In the current financial year, threshold and Performance Review Pay monies will be paid as one grant via the Specific Formula Grant mechanism. (In future years this will be in the base funding and distributed via the school formula process.)

The second is where the actual five point pay range can be reviewed following a change in circumstances or where Advanced Skills Teachers have taken on a higher level of responsibility or more challenging tasks that would justify them going on to a higher five point range. This would need to be negotiated and agreed with Brenda Emmott, the LEA AST co-ordinator If they are placed on a new five point range the funding will come through the Standards Fund. However, funding for progression up the new pay range will come from the Performance Related Pay Grant.
