Supported Self-Review of the Education of Children Looked After

I am writing to let you know about this Review which will be taking place over the next few months. Managed by and involving members of the Education of Children Looked After Project Board, the Review will examine the education provided to children who are Looked After by the County Council. You will be aware that this is a priority area for central government and also for the County Council. The Review is intended to provide us with baseline information from children, young people, their carers and others involved about their experiences of education.

The Review will use questionnaires and interviews with children, young people, their carers, Designated Teachers for Children Looked After, Education Co-ordinators, Social Workers and Educational Psychologists. We also hope that schools - irrespective of whether they currently have Children Looked After in their school - will wish to let us have their thoughts about how provision for Children Looked After might be improved. In particular, we would be glad to hear of any strategies you have used, resulting in Children Looked After progressing well in your school, which could be shared with other schools. Please enter your comments in the online comments boxes provided. In view of the proximity of the end of term please could we have your comments by 23rd September?

We believe this is the first time that a local authority has carried out this type of exercise. We hope that it will give us valuable information to further improve the education of the children for whom the County Council is the "corporate parent". The report on the Review will be available in the Autumn and we will ensure that you receive a summary of the findings.

If you have any questions about the exercise or would like further information, please contact Mel Croft.
