Disability Discrimination Act Norfolk's Accessibility Strategy
I am writing to draw your attention to accessibility requirements on schools and to ask for your support in obtaining information about the facilities available in schools. We are also consulting on a proposal to publicise information about facilities and adaptations for children with disabilities in our schools.- As you know, all schools are required to have an Access Plan. You should also know that under the DDA there is a requirement for all school accessibility policies to be reviewed and new plans in place for 2006-2009. If you need advice or support on that, please contact Kim Barber at: kim.barber@norfolk.gov.uk on 01603 259952.
- The Accessibility Steering Group has been working to develop a range of support measures. One of these is the DDA website:- http://schools.norfolk.gov.uk/myportal/index.cfm?s=1&m=268&p=190,index&zs=n which I know many schools and parents have accessed. We plan in the spring to put on that website a map giving details of the level of accessibility of each school. Before that I would be grateful for any comments you may have about the description of the accessibility of your school to ensure that the map is as accurate as possible. I am aware that our current data on your school is based upon our historical knowledge/audits and that recently many schools have carried out self managed accessibility improvement schemes that may not be reflected in our data or on the map. The map is attached.
- Finally, it would be extremely helpful to our planning and our work to support parents if you could complete and return the short checklist about accessible facilities available at your school to ensure our data is accurate as possible. Please return the checklist to Peter Dawes (Premises Assistant, Planning & Buildings)
