Teacher Assessments in Religious Education
Teacher Assessments in Religious Education
The new Norfolk Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education became statutory in September 2006. The syllabus includes a requirement for schools to report Levels of attainment against an eight-level scale for pupils at the end of Key Stages 2 and 3. This applies to all Community and Voluntary Controlled schools. (Voluntary Aided Roman Catholic schools do not necessarily follow the Norfolk Agreed Syllabus and these requirements would not, therefore, apply. Voluntary Aided Church of England schools have been recommended by the Diocese of Norwich and Ely to follow the Norfolk Agreed Syllabus and submit Teacher Assessment Levels.)The new syllabus requires assessment to take place in relation to two Attainment Targets: learning about religion, and learning from religion. The syllabus, p.34-35, gives Level descriptions for attainment in both Attainment Targets.
When assessing a pupil’s level of attainment at the end of Key Stage 2 or 3, Teachers should judge which description best fits the pupil’s performance across both Attainment Targets and report a single Level.
Submission of Teacher Assessment Levels
This year, when entering your pupils’ Teacher Assessments into your Phoenix Gold system (or other Management Information software), there will be a space for entering RE Levels. When you export (from Phoenix Gold) and submit your Teacher Assessments by secure data transfer, these RE Levels will be collected by the Information and Research Centre, for use by the Norfolk Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE). The Norfolk SACRE will use the information to monitor Religious Education on behalf of the Local Authority and make recommendations concerning advice and support. Please note that RE Levels in your data submission will not be accessed by NAA/QCA/DfES.
If your Management Information System is not Phoenix Gold, the RE Levels will not be included in your export file; the Information and Research Centre will therefore require a spreadsheet containing RE Levels.
Information on submission of all Teacher Assessments will be provided in an MI Sheet later this month.
