Suicide Prevention - Teaching about mental health and emotional well-being

I am delighted to be able to let you know that we have received funding to deliver training on implementing the PSHE teaching programme for secondary schools, and are able to offer some additional support as well.

In 2017 two secondary schools implemented the PSHE Mental health and Emotional Wellbeing teaching programme and the evaluation indicated some promising outcomes:

  • • 90% of young people said that schools should teach about mental health
  • • Young people indicated that they knew more about mental health after the programme
  • • Young people talked more about mental health with their friends
  • • More young people recognised they have a MH issue
  • • Young people were more likely to seek help

Young people said:

  • 'The teaching programme was good and it helped me to understand about mental health.'
  • 'I liked it since it raised awareness of mental health problems and how to deal with them.'
  • 'I think it is very helpful to know this information if you ever go through it or you could help a friend.'
  • 'I like it because it will help people get help and feel like they are not the only one.'
  • 'I think it's good to talk about mental health and well-being because you can always go and see someone and get help to get through it.'

Schools attending the training will need to make a commitment to teach about mental health and well-being and take part in an evaluation of the training course.

The first training session will be offered on the 5th of July at North Walsham High School.

We will also be running twilight training on 'Understanding self-harm and suicide prevention', the first session will be on the 16th of October.
