Ventilation in Gas Fuelled Kitchens
Ventilation in Gas Fuelled Kitchens - July 2008
Introduction
Regulations for gas-fuelled kitchens changed on 1st June 2008 as advised in MI sheet 57/08. This MI sheet reports on progress and next steps for schools likely to be affected by these changes.
Progress
NCS CORGI gas staff have carried out surveys of all known school meals kitchens with gas appliances. This includes non-NCS contract and non-BMPP schools. Foundation and VA schools have also been surveyed. |
The output from the surveys has enabled NPS and NCS staff to establish a priority list and identify common work categories required to satisfy the enhanced Gas Regulations. |
Achieving Compliance
There will be a number of ways in which kitchens will achieve compliance. Each kitchen will be assessed separately. Means of compliance will include: Changing appliances Improving ventilation (and ensuring incoming air does not adversely affect staff working in the kitchen) Larger schemes, such as replacing canopies Installing Gas proving devices /Gas Interlocks |
Next Steps
In most cases the scale of the work required can be determined from a desktop study of the survey results. This will enable preparation of a schedule of work for each school and this can be priced. |
Where further work (to comply with other legislation) is suggested in the NCS survey or the requirements are more complex, a further on-site assessment may be necessary by NPS/NCS to determine the extent of work required. |
Children's Services have grant funding available to pay for 75% of the improvement required to meet the Gas Regulations including for any kitchen equipment which needs replacing as a direct result of the changes in gas regulations. As previously notified, each school must undertake to meet the 25% balance of the cost. For primary schools that are in the NCS Group contract, NCS will pay 25% of the equipment costs. |
It is the responsibility of Foundation and VA schools to ensure this work is carried out. Advice and assistance will be offered from NPS/NCS if it is requested. The same 75% financial grant will be available from Children's Services as assessed on a site-by-site basis. Results from the survey recently completed will be sent to these schools as soon as possible, with costings. |
