TO ALL DESIGNATED TEACHERS FOR LOOKED AFTER CHILDREN

Now that the Designated Teacher for the Looked After Children role will become statutory this term, the Virtual School for Children in Care is providing training for all designated teachers.

This training will cover:
  		•  The statutory requirements of the Designated Teacher
  		• The importance of Personal Education Plans (PEPs) and how these are being redesigned
  		• How schools can promote the learning and emotional health and well being of looked after children and the role of the Virtual School for Children in Care in supporting schools to achieve this.

    The content will include:
  		•  Up-to-date information about the National and local context
  		• Perspectives of children who are looked after
  		• The emotional impact of being looked after on both the children themselves, and teachers, and how this can affect children's learning and wider school experience
    In light of this new statutory status of designated teachers, the expectation is that all designated teachers for looked after children will join a training course in their area/ phase. Special Schools and Pupil Referral Units are invited to select a training course of their choice. The training is free although schools are expected to meet the cost of travel and supply cover from their training budget.
