Revised Statutory Guidance 'Keeping Children Safe in Education' - for information only until September 2018

Status of Revised Statutory Guidance

On 17 May 2018, the Department for Education (DfE) published a revised version of 'Keeping Children Safe in Education'. The revised guidance for is information only at this stage so that schools and colleges can plan for the commencement of the guidance on 3 September 2018. Until the new guidance commences on 3 September 2018 the existing statutory guidance, 'Keeping Children Safe in Education' 2016 is still in force and schools and colleges must continue to have regard to it.

Along with the revised guidance, the DfE also published a response to the consultation held from December 2017 and February 2018: Keeping children safe in education: consultation response and revised advice: Sexual violence and sexual harassment between children in schools and colleges.

It is important to note that the [new] version of Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) that the DfE has published "for information" has not been updated to reflect the new safeguarding partner arrangements or the GDPR at this stage. Subject to Parliamentary clearance of the underpinning regulations, a revised version of Working Together to Safeguard Children will be published in early summer. When the revised KCSIE is published and comes into force on 3 September 2018 it will be fully reflective of schools' and colleges' role in the new safeguarding partner arrangements. It will also include updated guidance on information sharing practice under the new GDPR regulations and the Data Protection Act. Schools will need to ensure that they access the final version of the guidance once it is published.

Further information about the implications of the revised guidance and changes being made to the LA model Safeguarding Policy, training packages and other safeguarding resources the LA provides for schools and colleges will be issued as quickly as possible after half term.
