Light Fittings

A reminder that whilst it is acceptable for school caretakers to change lamps and starters they should not be changing light fittings as this is not only a risk to their health and safety, it is also work which should be carried out by a qualified electrician and certified as such.

The IEE Wiring Regulations 17th Edition (BS7671:2008) require all additions and alterations to an installation to have a Minor Works Certificate issued by a competent qualified electrician. Examples include the addition of socket outlets or lighting points to an existing circuit, relocation of a light switch and so on. This certificate may also be used for replacement of equipment such as accessories or luminaries. And appropriate inspection and testing should always be carried out irrespective of the extent of the work undertaken.
