Teacher Pension Grant Update

The Department for Education has recently provided an update on the Teachers Pension Grant, confirming that the allocations will be paid using a per pupil formula.

There will be a supplementary fund accompanying this grant as well to ensure there is additional support in place for schools facing unusually high pension costs.

Where a school faces a shortfall between their grant allocation and their actual increase in pension costs of more than 0.05% of their overall budget, they will be able to apply to the supplementary fund.

Further details on funding rates can be found on the DfE's Guidance on pension grant methodology.

Detailed allocations

The DfE will provide further detailed guidance and information in the autumn.

This will include:

  • school level allocations for mainstream schools
  • local authority level allocations for high needs
  • details of the Supplementary Fund and how to apply
  • details of applications for local authority centrally employed teachers and music education hubs

Payments will then be made later in the autumn.

We are advising schools who use the Educator Solutions Budget Planner Software to add 2 further lines when budgeting for this grant. You will be unable to over type or delete the original pension grant allocation. Therefore, please add 2 further lines against subjective code 99120 Additional Grant for Schools. One to fully remove the original allocation as a positive figure and add a further line for the new allocation. This will allow you to track the original allocation against your new budget based on the per pupil rates.

Any questions then please contact the Finance and Business Services Team for further information.
