Consultation on Medical Needs referrals
Statutory guidance (Ensuring a good education for children who cannot attend school because of health needs and Supporting pupils at school with medical conditions) outlines local authority and schools (maintained and academy) responsibilities towards young people who have medical conditions.
The Local Authority is undertaking a review of current procedures for young people who are too unwell to attend school and may require an alternative education provision. Currently, the LA commissions home-learning support via the Short Stay School for Norfolk for pupils who cannot attend for health reasons.
A key area for development includes a review of referral procedures to ensure that provision is timely, effective and facilitates a return to full-time education in school. The referral form and NCC Medical Needs Policy have been re-drafted in consultation with The Short Stay School and Engage Trust. Schools are invited to consult on the reviewed documents.
The consultation closes on Friday May 10, 2019. The Medical Needs Service 2019 consultation survey can be accessed here. Schools' feedback is invaluable and will be carefully considered. Final updated versions will be published from Friday May 17, 2019. We will then carry out a further operational review at the end of the summer term 2019.
In order to further support schools, we are hosting a training event for medical needs on June 17 2019, 12.30pm- 4.30pm. This training is suitable for school colleagues who lead on medical health needs. Please click here for further details and booking information.
