Child employment awareness
Do any of your pupils have a paper round? Do they have a Saturday job and or work during the school holidays? Maybe they are considering completing the Duke of Edinburgh Award? If so, they need a work permit.
The Local Authority is responsible for ensuring 13 to 16-year-olds who either intend to work, or already have a job, hold a valid work permit. Legislation regulates the types of work and number of hours, young people can and cannot do. This is to ensure young people are working safely and that the work does not affect their wellbeing or education. Further information can be found here at Child Employment.
To ensure employment is not negatively impacting on children's education, we will be asking for your comments before issuing a work permit. This new process, will start from September 2019 and an explanatory email will be sent nearer the time.
Please can you help raise awareness of the need for child work permits in your school, by sharing this information with staff, students and where possible parents. If you have any queries or would like someone to visit school and talk with staff and students please email us at childemployment@norfolk.gov.uk .
Please note: This does not apply to work experience placements.
