Revised Statutory Guidance

On 26 June 2019, the Department for Education (DfE) published a revised version of 'Keeping Children Safe in Education'. The revised guidance for is information only at this stage so that schools and colleges can plan for the commencement of the guidance on 2 September 2019. Until the new guidance commences on 2 September 2019 the existing statutory guidance, 'Keeping Children Safe in Education' 2018 is still in force and schools and colleges must continue to have regard to it.

Key Changes

Annex H of the draft guidance includes a Table of substantive changes from the September 2018 document. The most significant revisions to the document include:

Part one References to upskirting (now a criminal offence) and new information about serious violence
Part two Updates to reflect: the new safeguarding partnership arrangements, requirements for Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education, new Ofsted framework
Part three Clarity provided in relation to S128 checks for governors and new information about associate members appointed by the governing body to serve on governing body committees
Parts four and five No changes
Annex A Additional information on upskirting and additional information for clarity in relation to children with family members on prison and so- called 'honour-based' violence
Annex C Added link to new DfE guidance: Teaching online safety in school (June 2019). This guidance It outlines how schools can ensure their pupils understand how to stay safe and behave online as part of existing curriculum requirements. It complements existing and forthcoming subjects including Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education, Health Education, Citizenship and Computing.

Further information about any changes being made to the LA model Safeguarding Policy, training packages and other safeguarding resources the LA provides for schools and colleges will be issued as quickly as possible. We will aim to get the model policy issued before the end of summer term.
