Consultation on school term and holiday dates for 2021/2022 and 2022/2023

Local Authorities have a duty to set the school term dates for local authority maintained schools; community and voluntary controlled schools. Foundation, Trust, Voluntary Aided Schools and Academies are responsible for setting their own term dates. In practice most schools in Norfolk use the same term dates.

Schools must be open to pupils for 190 days in an academic year and 195 days for teachers. Home to school transport will be provided on the days the school is open for pupils.

Norfolk County Council works with other local authorities nearby to set the proposed dates for an academic year - this is known as the Eastern Region Model Calendar. We do this because we feel is it better to have a co-ordinated approach to setting school term dates to minimise the impact on families and school transport providers.

Norfolk County Council is consulting on the proposed school term and holiday dates for two school years; 2021/2022 and 2022/2023, based on the Eastern Region Model Calendar. This can be viewed through the survey link below.

The days coloured yellow on the model calendar are pupil holidays. Five days should be selected from these days for staff training days.

The following dates in 2021/2022 are suggested as staff training days:

  • 2 & 3 September 2021
  • 4 January 2022
  • 19 April 2022
  • 25 July 2022

The following dates in 2022/2023 are suggested as staff training days:

  • 2 & 5 September 2022
  • 3 January 2023
  • 17 April 2023
  • 24 July 2023

However, schools may decide to work twilight sessions instead of some or all of these days.

What happens next

The consultation ends on Friday 13 December 2019. The results of the consultation will be published on Norfolk County Council's website in Spring 2020.
