A day of celebration for your school during Refugee Week - Friday 11 June

Day of Welcome 2021: Friday 11 June

This celebration, run by Norfolk Schools of Sanctuary, is designed to support schools and families in marking Refugee Week (14-18 June) and to send a clear message that for those in need of sanctuary, our communities are welcoming places. Our aims are:

  1. To build understanding of the experiences and contributions of refugees and asylum seekers.
  2. To uncover and celebrate little-known stories of refugee migration.
  3. To signpost Refugee Week events which pupils, families and staff may wish to participate in.

A Day of Welcome — Norfolk Schools of Sanctuary

A Day of Welcome is a day of solidarity and learning in schools that aims to build a culture of welcome and understanding for refugees and asylum seekers.

www.norfolksos.co.uk

For 2021, A Day of Welcome will run across 3 counties with each county having their own special event: Norfolk Welcomes; Cambridgeshire Welcomes; and Essex Welcomes. Each participating school will have access to general and county-bespoke resources and activities.

If you would like to participate, register your school by completing this form (it takes 3 minutes) and we will then share with you the teaching resources and supporting materials that make it easy for schools, and families that are home-learning, to take part.

Our aims

  • To build understanding of the experiences and contributions of refugees and asylum seekers.
  • To uncover and celebrate little-known stories of refugee migration.
  • To signpost Refugee Week events which pupils, families and staff may wish to participate in.

The resources for A Day of Welcome 2021 are inspired by the stories of the Basque child refugees who came to Norfolk and Cambridge during the Spanish Civil War. You can learn more about their stories at the Havens East Online Exhibition. For our Essex schools we have created a special resource about the Basque children who sought haven at Theydon Bois.

We very much hope that you will join us for A Day of Welcome. But if you are unable to, you are still very welcome to use our wealth of resources across your curriculum and throughout the year. Please still register a note of interest (as above) and let us know how you will use the resources.

Thank you for joining us in building a culture of welcome in your community!
