Resources to support the involvement of children and young people and parents/carers in decision making

It is important to empower children and young people to be involved in the decisions that affect their lives. This means supporting them to recognise their right to be involved and supporting them with the skills and tools to do so.

The benefit of involving children and young people in decision making is the support and services they receive will meet their needs.

There are three different levels that children and young people should be involved:

  • At an individual level - involved in making decisions that relate to their own life
  • Operational/service level - involved in making decisions about what happens in the day to day running of a service
  • Strategic level - involved in influencing policy and practice

Involving children and young people leads to better decision making.

A set of participation resources has been collated to support professionals across education, health and care to involve children and young people and their parents/carers in decision making.

Please make time to look, find out more and reflect on how you could use them in your work.

Give feedback on these resources through our survey.
