Important updates on INTRAN and FREE use of Language Line for schools

INTRAN for Norfolk County Council schools

You are already able to access interpreting and translation services through INTRAN. There is therefore no membership fee, just a charge for each service. (face to face interpretation, telephone interpretation, written translation and British sign language and lip speaking)

To gain immediate access to your school's INTRAN ID code, which is required to book services, you can now either:

INTRAN for Academies and Free Schools (non-LA schools)

You are also able to access INTRAN services and can secure membership at preferential rates. To check and access your existing INTRAN membership you can click on the new INTRAN link on your school's MySchool section of the Norfolk Schools website to access you INTRAN ID code. Or contact Gary Ridgeon - gary.ridgeon@norfolk.gov.uk to check this.

If you are not an INTRAN member, the process to join is simple and straightforward. Simply contact intran@norfolk.gov.uk to discuss membership options.

What is INTRAN?

INTRAN is a non-profit public and third sector partnership which commissions interpreting and translation services on behalf of schools, councils, NHS organisations, criminal justice agencies, housing associations and a number of charities.

What are the benefits of joining INTRAN?

As the largest partnership it uses its bargaining power to secure best value for money, quality services at significantly reduced rates for its partners. Procuring interpreting services on an individual school or MAT basis would result in far higher costs, both in terms of charges to access interpreting and translation as well as staff costs to procure cost effective and quality assured services. INTRAN saves its partners' staff time through undertaking all contractual management of the services.

EAL funding, which is paid for the first 3 years that an EAL pupil is in education - and is currently £1,485 for Secondary and £550 for Primary EAL pupils - can be used to fund an INTRAN account. EAL funding is triggered in the October census.

Limited time offer to access Language Line for free

The EAL Advisory Service's offer of FREE use of Language Line to communicate with EAL families will continue for a limited time this academic year, but please adhere to the following Do and Don't for usage. If the service is not used appropriately, it will be necessary for us to change the code and require that schools contact us again in order to access it.

Do

  • Use ONLY for essential, but short communication (Max 15mins per child per week)
  • For longer calls use your own INTRAN or Interpretation services package. If you do not have this in place see the information below to set this up.
  • Send a log of EVERY call made to tanya.ingram@norfolk.gov.uk Include Your SCHOOL, DATE of call, STAFF member, LANGUAGE REQUIRED. Also please add if this service was used for an Afghan or Syrian refugee family.
  • Tell Language Line your name (spell this out) and your school's name (spell this out) when asked for 'Department'

Don't

  • Pass the ID code to staff without explaining time limits and the need to log each call
  • Wait for the FREE service to end before setting up your own access to INTRAN. Our service CANNOT be used for longer safeguarding, EHCP or Admission meetings, but having interpretation for such meetings is essential and ensures your schools fulfils its Equal Opportunity duty.

'Using Language Line has allowed us to demonstrate the respect that all our parents deserve by giving them equal access to communicate with school staff, which in turn has developed better relationships, shared understanding and raised the profile of families with EAL across our schools in general.' - Nelson Infants and Wensum Junior school
