Tackling sexual violence and harassment - support for schools and colleges

In response to the Ofsted review of sexual abuse in schools and colleges, colleagues from the Education Safeguarding Team, Education Inclusion & Opportunity and the Harmful Sexual Behaviour Team have been working in collaboration to provide an offer of support, guidance and training to education settings.

A series of webinars have been developed in line with the learning from the Ofsted review and the resultant changes in national guidance and the Ofsted inspection framework.

Webinar 1: Tackling Sexual Violence and Harassment in Education Settings - Learning from the Ofsted Thematic Review

Thursday 7 October, 11:30am to 12:30pm
Delivered by Kelly Waters; Senior Safeguarding Adviser

This session will focus on the implication of the Ofsted review, providing practical advice for DSLs and other senior leaders to be able to:

  • Identify and explain the findings of the Ofsted thematic review
  • Describe and explain whole school approaches to tackling sexual violence and harassment
  • Identify key questions and tools to support schools and colleges with implementing a whole school approach to tackling sexual violence and harassment

Webinar 2: RSHE: Preventing Sexual Harassment in Schools

Wednesday 13 October 3:45pm to 4:45pm
Delivered by Josie Rayner-Wells; Senior Adviser, Inclusion

This informative and interactive webinar will support DSLs and those with responsibility for leading and teaching RSHE to:

  • Understand the pivotal role of RSHE in being proactive and responsive to the challenge of sexual harassment in schools
  • Have clarity of the RSHE Guidance requirements
  • Be supported to plan a spiral, developmental RSHE curriculum that addresses contributing factors to sexual harassment

Webinar 3: Identifying and Addressing Harmful Sexual Behaviour in an Education Context

Thursday 4 November 2021, 10:30am to 12:30 pm
Friday 12 November 2021, 10:00am to 12pm
Delivered by Richard Hinton or Francesca Burgess, Harmful Sexual Behaviour Team

By the end of this webinar, participants should:

  • Understand the role of education providers in identifying, managing and reducing the risk of HSB in children and young people (CYP)
  • Understand how to effectively manage the risk of HSB in education settings through the use of targeted and environmental risk assessments
