SEMH support for schools as part of the Educational Psychology and Specialist Support Service

SEMH staff provide a range of services for children and young people with social, emotional and mental health difficulties.

The SEMH team sits within the Educational Psychology and Specialist Support Service and has recently expanded. It comprises SEMH practitioners and specialist support assistants. The remit is to support children and young people in schools and academies, further education provision, and local authority pre-school settings. This is achieved through participation in core consultations in schools and direct work with children in school with a focus on early intervention and prevention.

Services on offer

We provide a range of services for children with social, emotional and health difficulties. These services include but are not limited to:

  • Consultations with staff
  • Observation, assessment and advice
  • Advice pertaining to setting up Nurture groups
  • Practical strategies for managing challenging behaviour with individuals and whole classes
  • Direct intervention with children both individually and in groups
  • Training for developing skills for working with children with behavioural issues
  • Solution-focussed strategies
  • CBT approaches
  • Individual and small group work for anxiety management
  • Developing resilience
  • Mindfulness
  • Anger management/emotional regulation
  • Development of social/relational skills
  • Self-esteem building
  • Mentoring students
  • Conflict resolution, restorative approaches
  • Input into behaviour plans and pastoral support plans, family support plans
  • Input into EHCP processes

How to access the SEMH team

As part of the Local Offer, the SEMH team can be accessed through the regular school consultation and planning meetings.

There are two ways to access support:

  • A bespoke SEMH contract can be purchased via the EPSS traded offer
  • Additionally, SEMH services can be accessed via a standard EPSS contract
