Further support for secondary schools and colleges to tackle sexual violence and harassment

To build upon the current offer of support, guidance and training to education settings, we are pleased to inform you that, in collaboration with the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk, we have been successful in a bid for Home Office funding to deliver bystander intervention programmes in education settings.

The project aims to build upon the work already being done by education providers to reduce violence against women and girls through the development of bystander programmes in schools and colleges, empowering bystanders to be able to support peers and challenge inappropriate behaviour.

The first phase of this project will be to offer direct input in all secondary schools and colleges between 21 February and 31 March 2022. The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk has appointed Performance in Education to provide these sessions.

Performance in Education specialises in the PSHE curriculum, with a number of extremely successful theatre projects designed to deliver key learning objectives. They create customised learning programmes to address specific topics using professionally trained actors. Each live performance is enhanced with interactive workshops, a bespoke scheme of teaching materials and online resources.

The delivery is being designed within RSHE guidance and with the findings of the recent Ofsted review of sexual abuse in college and schools in mind. The target age group is 14- to 18-year-olds, but the delivery is open to younger age groups if schools feel it would be valuable.

The key learning outcomes for the project are:

  • To understand what sexual harassment and sexual violence are and why they are unacceptable
  • To be able to identify signs and symptoms of sexual harassment and sexual violence in several contexts
  • To feel confident and comfortable to intervene in a safe way when they identify sexual harassment and sexual violence
  • To know how to get help for themselves or others when they need it

In the new year, Performance in Education will contact every secondary school and college to offer sessions in accordance with your needs. The offer includes a performance session and an optional, additional workshop session. The performance includes audience engagement, to ensure young people are able to take the most from that session. We hope that every eligible setting in Norfolk will take up this offer.
