Recruitment of Early Career Teachers - Important News

DfE consultation: Appropriate body reforms and induction assessment

This new consultation announces the decision to move to a system in which teaching school hubs (TSHs) will become the main providers of AB services and Local Authorities will no longer carry out this role. It proposes a transition end date of September 2023:

It is important for schools, trusts and teachers to share experiences of induction so that due consideration can be given to inform a regulatory system that serves the needs of ECTs. We therefore encourage headteachers to respond to it by 5pm on 21 July 2022.

In the meantime, it is business as usual for Norfolk Appropriate Body. Please be assured we are working closely with the TSHs to ensure minimum disruption and facilitate a smooth transition.

For schools recruiting an ECT for September 2022 you will need to take the following steps.

  1. Register with an Appropriate Body

In accordance with the statutory guidance governing the Induction of ECTs (*2.26) ECTs must be registered with an Appropriate Body. You can register with Norfolk Appropriate Body here

*2.26 Once an ECT has been appointed, the headteacher/principal must notify the appropriate body in advance of the ECT taking up post. Failure to do so may delay the start of the induction period.

    Start date

The start date for induction should be the date when the ECT's induction programme formally commences. This may be a different date from when the ECT's contract starts.

To register your ECT you will need the following information.

    • QTS/TRN number
    • name and date of birth
    • name of Induction tutor
    • name of mentor
    • details of the chosen approach to the Early Career Framework

  2. Confirm approach to the ECF training

You will need to decide if you want to use a DfE-funded training provider, accredited materials, or design your own programme based on the ECF.

Once decided, you will need to login to DfE to let them know your intentions thorough the following link: Manage training for early career teachers (education.gov.uk)
