Health and Safety News - HSE inspections looking at Asbestos management

As we informed you last term, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have advised that they will be carrying out a programme of inspections from September 2022 onwards. They will be assessing how we (NCC) and our schools are managing the risks from asbestos. We were in the process of reviewing the Asbestos Management Compliance Code and Checklist when this announcement was made.

Schools will be contacted to arrange a suitable date and time to carry this out. The HSE will need to speak to a staff member with knowledge of how asbestos is managed by the school and may ask to see your asbestos register and asbestos management plan in advance of the visit, and information on how you share this with contractors.

The Asbestos Management Checklist C602 has been updated and is available to subscribing schools on HR InfoSpace. This updated version details additional questions to support you to ensure that the key areas of the Asbestos Control and Management Compliance Code have been implemented in your school. These are the areas that the HSE are likely to look at during a monitoring visit. Please complete this checklist during the first week of term.

Please contact healthandsafety@norfolk.gov.uk if you receive a call from the HSE or would like support in completing the checklist. If you are already following the requirements of the existing Asbestos Control and Management Compliance Code then you are complying with the requirements to management asbestos.

The Asbestos Management Compliance Code P602 and other associated documents will be updated shortly. We will communicate the details of the changes made via e-Courier and news on HR InfoSpace.
