Consultation with schools: Inclusion and SEND Thematic Toolkits

An exciting piece of work is taking place, coordinated by the Early Intervention and Prevention team at Norfolk County Council (NCC). We are developing a number of self-serve toolkits across a range of Inclusion and SEND (Special Education Needs and Disabilities) themes to provide schools with instant access to evidence-based information, guidance and resources.

The toolkits will cover:

  • Whole school culture and ethos to promote best practice - enabling positive safeguarding, attendance, attainment, wellbeing outcomes so Norfolk children can FLOURISH
  • Guidance on responding to specific challenges - including prejudice-based incidents, self-harm, sexualised behaviours, contraband etc. and how to develop a preventative approach to reduce the likelihood of reoccurrences or patterns of behavioural incidents
  • Cohort Resources - to effectively identify and meet the needs of cohorts within your school community including migrant and displaced children, victims of CE, young carers, children of serving families etc.
  • Practical resources - to provide needs-led support to individual pupils and/or small groups with targeted support who have needs including ASD, trauma, low self-esteem, eating disorders, bereavement and emotionally based school avoidance
  • Strategies and signposting - to secure effective family engagement
  • Audit tools - linked to relevant statutory guidance and best-practice approaches to ensure practice is fully compliant and help to inform school improvement planning processes
  • Plus, much more - all in a consistent and easy to navigate style.

Why are these toolkits being designed?

The toolkits are being designed so schools can access high quality resources and relevant information. The toolkits will be self-serve, so you and your school can easily access information and resources in a consistent way and when you need them. Advisers will continue to provide personalised support to schools.

Who for?

SLT, SENDCOs, Pastoral and Behaviour Leads and teachers.

How?

The information within each toolkit will be organised in a way which is accessible for schools seeking immediate support for pupil specific cases and/or more strategic whole school support and guidance

Proposed content for the toolkits includes:

  • Key information around the theme
  • Key local and national data
  • Links to relevant guidance and legislation
  • Model policies
  • Key considerations and resources for curriculum, teaching and learning
  • Links to staff CPD and training
  • Quality assured resources
  • Practical strategies for individual pupils, including those with SEND such as social stories
  • Example risk assessments and individual plans
  • Ideas for family engagement
  • Guidance on assessment, recording and reporting
  • Pupil and staff voice will be a key feature with content from school colleagues, pupils and families.

The toolkits will be developed collaboratively alongside schools, colleagues across NCC Learning and Inclusion, the newly formed School and Community teams and wider workforce partners as relevant. They will also be developed with input from Norfolk children and young people and their families.

We would welcome your input at this development stage

.

We are hosting a consultation session on 25/05/2023 between 15:45 - 16:45 to provide an opportunity to have your say on:

  • How the toolkits should be structured so they are as user friendly as possible
  • What content must be included to enable a whole-school approach
  • What types of tools / resources would be most useful for targeted support
  • Anything also you feel relevant to support the development of the toolkits.
