Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC)

You will be aware of the most recent communications from the DFE and resulting news headlines relating to RAAC in school buildings.

The issue of RAAC in schools was first raised in 2018. This is where a particular construction built between the late 1950s and 1980s which used a type of lightweight concrete plank has been found to have failed in some instances. RAAC was mostly in roofs but also occasionally walls and has meant complete roof collapse in some schools (elsewhere in the Country) and also hospitals. The DFE has engaged all local authority areas in investigating and managing this issue.

We proactively worked with all of the county council's maintained schools to identify if RAAC was present and if there were any problems. Structural engineers from NPS carried out surveys of 83 buildings and found no concerns. The most recent DFE guidance is available. We continue to monitor the updates in DFE guidance and other information on RAAC as it comes through, in case any additional assessment is required to ensure the health and safety of pupils.

We have written to our Multi Academy trusts and are writing to all LA maintained schools this week. If you are part of BMP, you are able to make contact with your surveyor if you have any concerns.

We have also set up a page in My school where we will store the guidance and any communication from us.

Please feel free to get in contact with Isabel Horner at Isabel.horner@norfolk.gov.uk if you have any concerns.
