Using Physical Activity as a Tool to Improve Outcomes

Funded support to help all young people improve their health and mindset in order to FLOURISH

Active Norfolk are funded to support schools to use physical activity as a tool to improve outcomes. This means we can directly help your school overcome challenges to getting pupils more active and broaden your understanding of how physical activity can help with brain function, development and mental health and wellbeing. We can also help you ensure opportunities to be more active are targeted towards those pupils that can benefit the most. Simply put, we want to help schools embed physical activity across their offer so that leading a healthy and active lifestyle is 'just what kids do.'

We can;

  • Support all school staff to use physical activity within interventions
  • Help identify where improving lifestyles can improve outcomes
  • Help align the physical activity offer to contribute to the whole school priorities.

We know that happy, healthy children are more likely to learn. Physical activity can help tackle things like behaviour, attendance, anxiety, confidence and self-esteem, concentration levels and social skills - all the things that worry us about those most vulnerable.

The recent publication of the School Sport and Activity Action Plan (publishing.service.gov.uk) sets out the governments vision to support schools to provide high quality PE and Sport for at least two hours a week, complimented by a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities. The plan supports the announcement that the PE & Sport Premium funding School Games are committed to 2025 and that schools are encouraged to have an equal access to all sports for all pupils.

Jo Thompson, Development Officer for Education has dedicated capacity to help schools through advice, guidance and training, as well as signposting and bespoke support. This is not to just help improve PE and School Sport; it can also help schools identify where their offer can be targeted to meet the needs of the pupils most at risk of an unhealthy lifestyle.

Opening Schools Facilities Fund: Howard Junior School - Active Norfolk

We are currently supporting 46 schools across the county to maximise this funding, increase activity levels of their pupils and work collaboratively with their local community.

If your school is in receipt of the Opening Schools Facilities Funding, then join our OSF Drop in Support Session on Wednesday 11 October, 3.30-4.30pm.

Feel free to join this open session at any point to ask questions, highlight issues or just to touch base. We'll be pleased to see you and help in any way we can.

A huge THANK YOU to all schools that supported the Big Norfolk Holiday Fun Programme this Summer.

Whether you were a venue and deliverer or you signposted to the programme you've helped us to improve on last summer by;

  • More variety of provision
  • More SEND pupil provision and take up
  • More teens accessing the offer

The Norfolk School Games is launching a series of inspirational experiences for pupils across the county in readiness for the new academic year.

November 2023 will see the return of our popular Cross-Country Finals taking place this year at High Lodge, Thetford Forest. There will also be a motivational offer of enriching events, competitions and festivals in your local area. The School Games is funded by Sport England and is free for all education settings to participate in.

Norfolk has a team of dedicated School Games Organisers within 8 School Sport Partnerships, who are here to support Primary, Secondary and SEND schools to develop their physical activity programmes and sporting opportunities.

Active Lives Survey 2023-24 launches to schools

The Sport England Children and Young People Active Lives Survey is in its 6th year now.

It provides schools with a report of their pupils' levels of physical activity, physical literacy, swimming proficiency, wellbeing, self-efficacy and social trust. Schools who participate will receive a bespoke report outlining these results and will provide evidence and insight into how it engages its pupils in sport and physical activity. This data can help inform your approach to PE, sport, physical activity and help ensure evidence-led decision making around the PE and Sport premium, giving a clear rationale for spend as well as an opportunity to demonstrate impact. Each term, schools are randomly chosen to take part although the survey can also be completed voluntarily.
